What can local authorities and bus operators do to enhance safety for women, girls and other vulnerable users?
This event will highlight the existing safety concerns for women and girl’s on buses, but also what we can do to improve safety.
What does a safer bus network look like for women, girls and other vulnerable users?
• Gender+ Bus; solutions to tackle harassment and violence against women and girls for a safer and inclusive bus network – Lucy will share research on barriers and opportunities for improving women’s safety accessing and using buses with a focus on reporting and staff awareness and intervention training
• An overview of the GET-IT tool will be shared by Laura Brooks.
• Susan Leadbetter will provide an overview of the Safety Inclusion Assessment tool.
This event is aimed towards bus/coach operators, local planning and highway authorities, combined authorities. But it is open to anyone and everyone with an interest in improving safety on buses.

Susan Leadbetter - Principal Consultant – Liveable Places at WSP
Leads WSPs dedicated Women and Girls' safety team and undertook extensive research into safety perceptions of women and girls on the transport network.
Laura Brooks - CTPP, Senior Planning Adviser at DfT
Laura is a chartered transport planner who is a co-founder of the Gender Equality Toolkit in Transport (GET-IT).
Dr Lucy Baker - Aberystwyth University and THINK, Research Associate
Lucy is a social geographer with research expertise in gender and inclusion in transport and mobility. Lucy is leading the Gender+ Bus project at Aberystwyth University which is considering women’s safety using and accessing buses in Wales and the UK.
