Bus Operational Safety: Bus Operators and All Road Users Need to Know and Do

What bus operators, bus drivers, designers, highway and enforcement authorities and all road users need to know and do.

Kate Carpenter is Director of Operational Road Safety at Jacobs and has 36 years of experience in design network management and safety, and has specialised in operational safety for workers, users and others affected by design and network activities.

Kate supports Strategic Highway Authorities including National Highways, TfL, Welsh Government, Transport Scotland and many local highway authorities. Kate will give an overview of some factors affecting safety evaluation of bus routes, stop location and infrastructure, operational decisions and passenger behaviour – within buses, when boarding and alighting, and in the surrounding highway and public realm network. She will note some of the conflicting objectives and user needs that designers and operators must address in their design, network and operational decisions
